“Zippy Caught it!”
Friday, June 12, 2009
Lighting flashed and the dark rain clouds begin to move in but the Trinity
warriors were not intimidated; they played like…err…like the Warriors they
are…best they could…I think.
Anyhow, they did a great job of coming back from a near whitewash in the
first game to make the second game rather exciting. We lost both games but
we keep our dignity…if you don’t consider the part where we tried to bribe
a couple of their players to defect to our side. Well, even if they laughed
at that attempt, we held our heads up high.
Now for the rundown:
Mz. Excitement, Linda “Zippy” Springer lived up to her handle. She played the
outfield with gusto. This little stick of dynamite even snagged a fly ball
near the back left field fence for a very important out.. (No one was more
surprised than her.) Way to go Dy-Na-Mite!!
Our own “double nickel”, in age that is, Jumping Jack Flash Haga was pulled
out of retirement to complete the roster. This aged one smoked the bases with
his turn and burn speed. The other team had to pull out the gas masks so as
not to be choked by the smoke from his fiery feet.. Flash added the only home
run from our team. Afterwards he was administered oxygen and cold compresses
to revive him.
Our Lisa “Stick” Jordan looked pretty good on second base again. She is still
working on her batting. She was overheard saying, “If that silly ball will
just stay still long enough for me to hit it.” Hey, keep wishing “Stick” -
miracles can happen.
“Missile” Mike Harrison picked up his pitching in the first game. Coach Mike
is still struggling at bat. Memories of days gone by flood his head when he
used to hit them over the fence. Hang in there Mike, old age gets worse.
Always on top of the game…Faye “Downtown Girl” Reel was outstanding at first.
This limber gal can play that bag. This stretch to catch sweetie is fun to
watch and one of our greatest assets on the field.
Rosie “Moto Boat” Decker plays with great intensity. If they all had her resolve,
we’d be in the playoffs. Her outfield play is courageous. At bat, she can
cause a little concern. When she connects she can really move; when she
sticks out, she is somber. This one takes he game seriously and wants to win.
That’s my kind of gal.
A J “Fire Power” Decker plays with the same intensity of his precious wife.
After the sun moved out of his eyes, he was able to snag most everything that
came his way in the outfield. Saved our bacon many a time out there.
Anchors away sailor.
Our Mike “Roughie” Duffy, had finally got to pitch the second game. He
found the strike zone and played there most of the game. Made his wife
proud for sure as well as the rest of us. His weakness was usually his
strength; that be his batting. The “graahhhh” sound came after his swings
many times during these sweltering games. Next week, Mike, there is always
next week.
Mike’s, precious wife, Gillian “Toughie” Duffy, did a good job catching
the first game.. The umpire didn’t have to back her up…most of the time.
She preformed well even if we didn’t have any Little Debbies to tempt her with.
Galloping Bob “Lean Bean” Stueber played third base but spent a lot of time
chasing flies in the left outfield as well. He who runs like a Camel, (not
the cigarette), loves to exercise those long legs of his in the open field;
always with a wide grin on his face. Gotta love that sight. Poetry in motion.
Makes the Mona Lisa look drab. That grin can be catchy. Way to go Lean Bean!
Tina “Mz. Mom” Stueber was playing without upchucking this time. Being well
is much better than being sick, isn’t it girl? She got a good workout with
all the right field hitters this time. Reminded her of all those “get loose”
animals at her work. Spend all your time chasing after something: this time
flies and grounders. All the same; hard to handle!
This catcher Jennifer “Crafty” Milam loves the game. Her quite smile and
poised demeanor is a testimony to sportsmanship and having fun swinging at
gnats. One day she will accidentally hit a ball while swatting at them
pesky gnats and, probably faint. Not to worry, I am trained at resuscitation…
wave a Little Debbie and folks pop right up.
Ron “Smoking” Girard played consistently in both games. The heat and humidity
didn’t seem to bother Ron much. This smoking powder keg always gives his all.
Kristy, “Cheshire Cat,” Girard is always ready with a big smile and a little
girls enthusiasm. She was really hustling in right field and had a great
time watching the strikes go by at bat…yep, with that never ending smile
even when the Ump shouts, “Oooout!” (How does she keep that smile?)
Well, no one will be writing home to mom about our glorious games, but we
will all remember the times together in the dug-out; the times of camaraderie;
the times of joy in sharing the intimate moments of defeat; Ooops, I mean
times of near victory. (Okay, so I lied a little bit…sue me!)
Till next time, I remain, yours truly, 911, Reserve Extraordinary,
Lucian Thompson
